Lot 28

early 19th century graduated highboy chest of drawers, american, 54 1/2" x 42" x 22"

Note of provenance from the consignor:"This hi-boy chest came from the American-born Canadian artist Mary Hiester Reid (1854–1921), from Pennsylvania, a trailblazing artist. After her death, it was owned by her husband artist G. A. Reid and his wife, artist Mary Wrinch Reid (1877–1969), whom he married in 1922. It was purchased from her estate in 1970. It is an American chest but once was larger: likely Mary Hiester Reid had the bottom drawer it once had, removed. It has been looked at by Morrison H. Heckscher, the early American furniture curator of the Metropolitan Museum who has examples of this type of chest with the bottom drawer in the Metropolitan Museum collection."note: there is evidence of bracket feet being replaced by later bun feet with castors, please see additional images
